CMHA20 Presents Youth Mental Wellness Films

Hawaiʻi Women in Filmmaking, a local feminist nonprofit committed to achieving gender equity in filmmaking, invites you to an online film screening event, celebrating a set of films made by local Hawai'i girls related to mental health and wellness during the current COVID-19 epidemic.

Hawaiʻi Women in Filmmaking (HWF) has offered filmmaking camps for girls since 2012 and served close to 500 teens. Throughout this time, participants have made films related to youth mental health, and by witnessing the impact that making and sharing these films has had so far, “we decided to make mental wellness the focus of this upcoming program, to provide a safe space to explore and discuss mental health and wellness; and produce short films that can facilitate conversations about these topics with their peers and the community at large” said Vera Zambonelli, executive director of HWF.

The films were produced as part of a recent online filmmaking camp that weaved film curriculum led by HWF mentors and instructors, and Girls’ Circles peer support groups facilitated by Kealahou Services social workers who specialize in working with local girls and mental health issues.

This event is sponsored by the 2020 Hawai'i Children's Mental Health Awareness Committee (CMHA20), including Hawai'i Women in Filmmaking, Hawai'i Arts Alliance, and the Hawai'i Dept. of Health's Child & Adolescent Mental Health Division and Kealahou Services program.
